Ingredients
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 ½ tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)
- 1 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed, strained)
- 1 tbsp orange zest
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 3 large egg yolks
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- Fresh orange slices or candied orange peel for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla; mix until smooth. Gradually stir in hot coffee.
- Divide the batter among the prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
- For the orange filling, combine sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks in a saucepan. Slowly whisk in orange juice and heat until thickened. Stir in zest and butter; cool completely.
- For the ganache, heat cream until steaming; pour over dark chocolate and stir until smooth. Add butter for shine.
- Assemble by layering cakes with orange filling between them. Pour ganache over the top.
