  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup warm whole milk
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup softened unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring (gel or liquid)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt (for filling)
  • 8 oz softened cream cheese (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup softened unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Pinch of salt (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk and water; stir in yeast and let sit until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Add yeast mixture, butter, eggs, red food coloring, and vanilla extract; mix until combined.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl and cover; let rise for one hour.
  4. Prepare the filling by mixing softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a separate bowl.
  5. Roll out the dough into a rectangle; spread the filling evenly over it.
  6. Roll tightly from one end to another; slice into equal pieces and place in a greased baking sheet.
  7. Cover again and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for about 25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. For frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until creamy; gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.
  10. Once cooled slightly, frost generously before serving.
